"Why? What did you want to see?"

He laughs. "Nothing in particular. I just wondered what you'd say."

[stackingthedeck]

She rolls her eyes. "Maybe if you didn't like such crappy movies I'd pick them to see."

[bothbarrels]

He shot an amused smile her way. "Seriously, who doesn't enjoy a good ninja flick now and then?"

[stackingthedeck]

"Me, that's who. Who even cares about ninja movies? They're not good ninjas if I can see all of them."

[bothbarrels]

She actually had a good point. He kept on smiling. "If they're the main characters, of course you're going to see them."

[stackingthedeck]

"Then they shouldn't be called ninjas. Just grown men who run around trying to be sneaky in their pajamas."

[bothbarrels]

He laughs. "We'll find a happy medium I'm sure." Like that movie about the married spy couple. That one would be pretty fun to watch.

[stackingthedeck]

"Yeah. One that doesn't involve ninjas." They're approaching the apartment complex and she's taking stock of the cars to see which of their parents will be home. So far, looks like only their mom is around which will make things easier.

He starts up the stairs that will lead to the door of their apartment. "What time is your date?"

[stackingthedeck]

She lets him take the lead so he can mess with unlocking the door. "He's picking me up around eight."

[bothbarrels]

"Wow, that is late." On a school night, too.

[stackingthedeck]

"So? It's not like anyone cares what time I get home." Besides her brother, anyway.

[bothbarrels]

He sighs. "Yeah, sure." Of course he worried about her, he had to make up for their parents' lax supervision.

[stackingthedeck]

She knows that look on his face. "Am I going to get an earful from you when I get back in late?"

[bothbarrels]

"No...you're going to do what you're going to do." If there's something he's learned by now it's that his sister has a mind of her own.

[stackingthedeck]

"Hey, you're learning," she jokes. "I wonder what other tricks I can teach you."

[bothbarrels]

"I'm not an old dog yet, but I won't play fetch." He sets his bag in the front room and goes to settle in on the couch. Pretty soon he'll start dinner but it's a little early for that.

[stackingthedeck]

"How about rolling over?" She kicks her shoes off in the living room and sets her back down wherever. She's contemplating getting some homework done before her date, but for now she opts to sit on her end of the couch with her sketchbook.

[bothbarrels]

He eyes her shoes but doesn't say anything. "I don't roll over either." Though he sort of was, when it came to his decision not to nag after she called him out on it.

[stackingthedeck]

"Yeah, sure you don't." She's sitting with her back to the armrest and her knees pulled up to rest her sketchbook against. "Just like how you're not going to nag me in a second about my shoes." Because yes, she caught you looking.

[bothbarrels]

He rolled his eyes. "Put them away, then. Save me the trouble."

[stackingthedeck]

"When I'm done. I'm working on art homework." Which is code for she doesn't want to do her real homework, so she's drawing instead. It's a lot more fun.

[bothbarrels]

"What do they have you doing now?" He has no problem with her indulging that impulse, at least right now. No one wants to hop right to work after getting home from school.

"Family portraits, so don't move," she jokes and pretends to study his face for a moment before continuing her sketch.
