[ He and Delta have been on the run for a few years now- long enough for him to get used to it, long enough for him to grow resigned that maybe it's just them, maybe things didn't turn out exactly like he'd wanted. They're still alive, though, and he tells himself that's something. That's something to look forward to. For the longest time, it is. It's just the two of them, just he and Delta and every so often they stop on a planet for a longer period of time, just to get around, meet some people.

Delta insists on it, anymore, after watching York fall into a depressive slump, and he insists on them stopping every so often, on York getting real, human contact, going out to dinner, doing something to take care of himself.

It's how they hear rumors of people passing through the outskirts of town-- purple armor. York takes note of it, has Delta check the radios and the comms once they're holed up in a hotel for the week, and after getting an idea of where they might be, he goes looking, hopeful. ]

It was the right thing to do. What the Director was doing-- Connie was trying to get it out there. Tex wasn't as worried about that- she was just trying to stop him from doing what he was doing.

[ He stabs a piece of pasta with a frown ]

It didn't work out good for anyone.

It sounds like a load of bullshit. [ Her words were blunt and she still didn't think York was telling them the truth, regardless of what her brother thought. ]

[ He stayed quiet for a few moments, apparently concentrating on his food. Sometimes he wondered how he'd ever convinced his sister to leave with him, when this was her opinion on the way things had shaken out. He'd had plenty of time to think this over, and even without knowing the details, he just knew deep down that they'd only been trying to do the right thing. It was a gut feeling that he'd never been able to talk himself out of. When he spoke he looked up just enough to catch his sister's eye from under his brows. ]

Well, I believe him.

[ York cuts her a look, frustrated, but he doesn't try to fight her, he just presses his lips in a thin line and doesn't argue it, doesn't make things worse. Instead, he turns his attention to North, shrugging. ]

Like I said. Nothing worked how how we planned.

I could have told you that. [ None of it had been well planned out by the looks of it. ]

[ As usual his sister's little comments were not helpful. He shot her a small frown before returning his attention to York. ]

I guess you managed to get away in the aftermath? There was a lot of chaos and confusion. That's how we pulled it off.

[ Hey, they did what they could with the time they had. ]

Yeah, D and I ditched when everything went to hell. I-- we tried. Damnit, we tried to get some people out but we nearly got killed doing it and so we--

[ He ducks his head, swallowing. ]

We left.

Don't pretend like you cared about any of us.

Lexi, please. [ He says it a bit sharply, because he knows York well enough to know he's swallowing back some emotion. And he also figures he knows who York's referring to. Though, really, despite his sister's cynicism, York's one of those people who has a heart of gold, deep down. In his most optimistic moments York had probably thought he'd be able to get most of them to come with him. ]

[ He doesn't bristle, but his eyes do swing up over to her as he polishes off half of his meal, and sips his soda, quiet. ]

You're not gonna believe me even if I said I did, but we did.

[ Both he and Delta. ]

[ She rolled her eyes. ] Whatever. [ If that was all he had to say for himself, then she'd ignore him and focus on her food. Until he said something that upset her, anyway. ]

[ In a way it's sort of too bad South is here with them, because this conversation had been going a lot easier before she'd arrived. He simply wasn't willing to set her out on her ear, though, no matter how much she seemed to be trying to prove she deserved it sometimes. He'd always looked out for her and he certainly didn't intend to stop now.

In any case he also wasn't willing to let her attitude change his mind. She was blinded by her own cynicism, and, well, maybe hearing them talk about their thought processes would help her release some of that. One could always hope.

He glances at his sister, then seeing that she was using her body posture to wall them off, proceeded to change his own to show he was more invested in the conversation with York, slightly angled toward him and better able to see his friend's face, and crossed his ankle over his other knee to better balance the plate in his lap. ]

D'you get a chance to, uh...talk to anyone, or did things fall apart too quick?

[ Obviously he's not talking about just 'anyone', but he wasn't sure how sensitive York would be to hearing Carolina's name, and he sure knew his sister wouldn't be thrilled to hear it. ]

[ Oh.

Yeah, that's still a sore subject, years later. York hesitates a moment, poking at his food. It's been a while since he's had good stuff like this so he knows not to waste it, but god, talking about any of this doesn't exactly make him have an appetite. ]

Not long enough. Didn't work out that well for anyone involved, really.

It all happened pretty fast. [ He glances at South; it's starting to look like for all of their sakes it's just best to try move the conversation along to something more neutral. ]

Still, we're still around. That means there's hope.

[ He can't help the small, affectionate smile at North for saying that. Delta transmits the data equivalent of that to Theta, as York takes a long drink of his soda. ]

Captain Optimism, over here, huh.

Don't know how much hope that is. [She grumbled and kept her eyes on her food. She wasn't as optimistic as her brother.]

Just enough to keep pushing forward, if it has to be. [ He may be clinging to a positive viewpoint, but he's pragmatic about it. If they didn't have that, it'd be too easy to feel like giving up. ]

It's enough.

[ It has to be, because they're going to keep going no matter what. York leans back, and forces tension out of him with a sigh. ]

Barely. [She still wasn't sure why they were here besides the food. Her hands clench her silverware tightly as she eats and she watches York out of the corner of her eyes.]

[ He makes a small sound, just a catch in his throat, looking at her. It isn't meant to be a reproachful sound. It's just sort of...realizing that she's not planning to be okay with this. And if she insists on leaving, he's going to go along with that. Because how can he not? He's glad she's not looking at him when that resignation flashes across his face, though, because if she noticed, she would know, and she'd call things to a close right then. ]

[ He doesn't rise to the bait right now, instead polishing off a little more, before offering the plate to North with a wry look. ]

You wanna try?

[She wasn't okay with this, but she also wasn't about to run off by herself and sleeping in a real bed they didn't have to pay for was a nice thought. For now, she'd hold her silence and finish her meal.]

[ He'd sort of forgotten they were planning on switching plates and he makes a small 'hm' sound, swallowing the bite of food in his mouth and offering his own plate to York in return. ]

Thanks. I was just enjoying this so much I didn't even think.

[ He snags the other plate and reclines back, poking at it idly. ]

It's fine-- was it good?

Yeah, great stuff.

[ Of course, the fact that it was fresh and not an MRE was a huge bonus.

He ate the second course as eagerly as the first, drinking his soda and feeling pleasantly full afterward. ]

I'm not sure when the last time was we had so much to eat at once.
